Carla Whitfield, SMSH Family Nurse Practitioner, was chosen as the fourth quarter 2016 Employee of the Quarter.
Carla Whitfield was recently named South Mississippi State Hospital’s fourth quarter 2016 Employee of the Quarter. She began working at SMSH as a family nurse practitioner in August 2015.
“Patients are more receptive with Carla because of the respect she shows them,” said May Watson, RN/Unit Coordinator. “She keeps all disciplines involved in order to provide the best quality care. She is versatile in that she can be a team player or a leader in any situation. She truly goes above and beyond and will not back down from any task.”
Whitfield, currently a Lamar County resident, is a native of Marion County and a 1979 graduate of Columbia Academy. She earned an Associate’s degree in Nursing from Pearl River Community College in 1988, a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2003, and a Master’s degree in Nursing from the Mississippi University for Women in 2004.
“I love SMSH,” said Whitfeld. “The atmosphere is always pleasant. The buildings are so clean and well-maintained. The clinical staff is very professional and very patient-oriented. I love the administrative personnel, as they are always helpful with any aspect of my duties. My collaborators are very supportive; I never mind coming to work, and I love the patients we serve. It is a privilege to serve the patients we see.”
Prior to her work at SMSH, Whitfield worked at Lumberton Family Health Center, Internal Medicine Clinic in Columbia, and several other health care centers around the Pine Belt area.
She is a member of the Mississippi Nurses Association, the American Nurses Association, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing, Temple Baptist Church, and is also a Diamond-level member of Friends of SMSH.
Whitfield and her husband, John, have been married 33 years; they have four sons and three grandchildren. In her spare time, Whitfield enjoys time with family, cooking, reading, playing games, sewing, and her pets.
